Job Description: 

SunPower is seeking a hands-on Electrical Engineer, a key role in our Commercial and Residential Products Engineering team. This position requires the electrical engineer to be a subject matter expert in eBOS components (inverters, wiring, combiner boxes, racking, etc.) and to work with the Application Engineering team in supporting released products as well as legacy hardware and software components. In addition, the electrical engineer will develop test plans and methodologies to qualify third-party devices as part of a complete solar and storage system for both legacy and new product offerings. Finally, the electrical engineer will interface with NTRLs in supporting system witness testing with SunPower and third-party products.

Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for both residential and commercial products with a strong focus on eBOS components
  • Support the Application Engineering team in residential and commercial customer escalations
  • Develop test plans as part of third party HW and SW component qualification
  • Support the Quality and Reliability department with technical data and analysis of third-party products
  • Develop and maintain technical standards and references to be used by internal and external engineering partners
  • Perform and review calculations and modeling related to conductor and equipment sizing, short-circuit and arc-flash analysis, protection and overcurrent coordination, etc.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with vendors to stay current on new and obsolete product road maps
  • Support cost reduction initiatives while maintaining quality and compliance with national, local, and customer-specific requirements

Minimum Education & Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, with a focus in Power Systems preferred
  • Minimum 4 years experience (or equivalent) in the renewable energy electrical industry
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards, including the NEC/NFPA, the NESC, UL and the IEEE
  • Fluency in MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Visio

Skills & Qualifications: 

  • Ability to specify, draw and modify single line diagrams (SLDs)
  • Familiarity with permitting and grid interconnection requirements for North America
  • Excellent technical understanding of both residential and commercial grid-tied photovoltaic systems
  • Deep knowledge of energy storage & PV inverters, monitoring and communications
  • Experience in building both residential and commercial electrical PV and PV+Storage systems
  • Ability to size and specify switchgear, panel boards, transformers, meters, OCPDs, SPDs, cables and conduits
  • Familiarity with interconnection requirements from LV to MV systems for commercial systems
  • Ability to interface as a technical contact with utilities for interconnection approval
  • Experience in Off-grid or Micro-grid system development or deployment a plus
  • Experience with electrical network modeling and simulation software tools such as ETAP, SKM, CYME a plus
  • Electrical PE Certification or path to certification a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to interface effectively with cross-functional groups of all levels and competencies
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
